Soap Making Recipes - Molds and Molding

Most soap Making Molds today are made from either some form of plastic or Silicone. The later being the favoured material because it is flexible, hardwearing and the soap does not stick to it. For people making soap at home It is possible to use a box lined with cling film but of course in doing this you are limited to only using very basic shapes.

Soaps need to be purified, and the way this is done is the crude curd is boiled with water and then salt is used to get the soap from the suspension. Doing this will remove the most commonaly found impurities as well as the Sodium Hydroxide and the Glycerol.

Any water left after this is removed either in a  vacuum or spray dryer. If you are making this soap at home you would probably just leave it on a drying rack until it has cured or even in a chill roll, this is a traditional method which is used by soap making artisans all over the world. Once the soap is at this stage then you can begin to shape the soap by pressing it into molds, bars or blocks. These can then be cut into slices or blocks as you desire. if the soap is made into small pellets then it is at this stage that other materials can be added, such as perfumes, oils and even metal. These are then milled and put through a special chamber to remove the last traces of moisture. It is at this stage that the soap can be used or sold.

As I have said some soap making recipes include the addition of metals such as Aluminium, Nickel, Silver and Titanium near the end of the soap making process. These metals have to be in minute particles to stop damage being done to the user. They can be used to alter the color of the finished item or another purpose is to kill bacteria on the skin. What happens there is the metal strips electrons away from the surface of the bacteria as they rub together. This has a dramatic effect on the bacteria and once they lose a certain amount of electrons they can no longer survive or function properly and then quite simply die. The anti-bacterial properties of certain metal has been used before in industry so it is well tried and tested. Another use is to destroy odours on the skin, this works equally as well because the odours themselves are caused by bacteria multiplying. These metals stop this and the effect will last because of the traces left on the skin.

Other things that are added are sand or pumice and this is to produce a much harsher soap or scourer. Pumice is not used very much today because it can be difficult to get an even particle size and also because of the fact that it is too harsh for our delicate skin nowadays. Sand on the other hand (excuse the pun) is ideal and often used in exfoliating soaps where it will remove the dead skin cells fromm the body leaving it silky smooth. Do this before you go out in the sun and your tan will last a lot longer, don't forget your sun cream though.
